Artist Philosophy

When I opened a new pack of writing paper recently, I pondered on how many packs
of paper I had used over the years, 50, 100, 1000, well less than 1000 that's for certain. 1000 packs
contain half a million sheets of paper, that's a stack 55 metres high. If you counted out 60 million sheets,
one for every man, woman and child in the UK, you would have a stack 6.5km high. Some of those sheets,
as in life, will be wasted, others will exude love, hate, great words and sorrow, in fact, all the gamut of
human thinking and feeling.  Yet all sheets are significant, are individual, are part of the whole.
It is no accident that the work I produce relies heavily on the use of accidental marks. Drips
and brush strokes are the synergy of creation and evolution. A brush stroke will give
rise to the motion of the paint that follows, the paint must be watched and nurtured
until it evolves into more than just the initial mark. Coherence out of chaos being the
structure of the natural world. Paintings are worked as fractal mathematics, where after
the initial conception, the work mutates and is dependant on this continual evolution
until a coherent position is found. Each piece of work should also be considered as a
snap shot of time. There is no "finished work" here, the presented painting is just a
part of its evolution, be it fresh and youthful or mature with the signs of age deep within
its paint layers. Indeed, some canvases never see the light of day as their existence
shows me no meaning and so never reach an audience. An abstract painting for me has
an ethereal existence, reflecting back an interpreted version of the viewer's own thoughts.
